Beyond the Frame on Romantic and Fashion Gaze

Poetry, sensuality, and an ethereal sense of glamour—these are the elements that define the visual world of Camilla Akrans. Her work is a delicate balance of femininity, bold shapes, and vibrant colors, often intertwined with the timeless symbolism of flowers. At Squeeze, she is an artist we feel a profound need to celebrate.
Having spent my career as a gaffer, working alongside countless photographers for a diverse range of global clients, I have developed a visceral sensitivity to the mood of lighting. For me, lighting isn’t just a technicality; it is the soul of the image. My philosophy has always been simple: “No good light, no good photography!” If the light doesn’t speak, the image doesn’t move me.
While I haven’t had the professional privilege of collaborating with Camilla yet—a milestone I still hope to achieve in my career—her mastery of light continues to inspire my passion. But as we say in this industry… who knows what the future holds!
Camilla Akrans Born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1975, Camilla developed an interest in photography at an early age. She studied photography at the University of Gothenburg and then moved to London to pursue a career as a professional photographer. After working as an assistant for several years, she began shooting for magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and Marie Claire.
I’ve been following her for 15 years now, I love her old point of view so much, a point of view she still has now, maybe a little less glamorous than she uses to be, but still her vision in almost all of her shots.
We begin to exalt his strength , in order of relevance from my point of view, Femininity, which is something I really saw and still see in all his work.
Maybe someone could argue that Femmin is…” gone” and that the woman must be “fluid” and must also be not so feminine, and bla bla ba….”, But for me feminine is still the opposite of the masculine, and is also what make a woman be a step up compared to a man. Actually also on the catwalk, there are always more fashion designers back to a “classic” feminine mood or their collections, and this probably for demonstrate that both woman and man want to take a step back.
Let’s start : Her woman is on an age not too young , not too old, I will tell about 20 or 35 years, and I certainly am not taking on the age of real models!
What she needs to hit the mark of the shot, is not that much!! She will need, of course, a model, a sweet, beautiful and sensual model, deep eye, soft light, a natural environment, and…. of course a flower.
Those are the essential elements to recognize her photography, but trust me, is not at all easy, to mix all these elements and obtain shoots like she does!! She has the vision inside herself, doesn’t matter with whom she is working, with those elements she will create always a piece of art, an image that will be able to stay forever and ever. Her women, are not too shy, they look at the spectators straight in the eyes, with a glance that looks like tells the spectators, “Hi, I am here, I am woman, I could…….., yes I could everything, just please show me how you are going to take care about me!”
Of course this is. My feeling looking at her art, at hers woman.
Another really important element on her stories is the magic she can bring on the shoot, by using soft filter or even soft screens between her and the subject, is very important that the subject still “moving” on an evanescent and dreaming environment, it could be, a ray of light arriving from the back, a strong soft back light, but she need a magic feeling on her photos to make alive her creatures.
About her clients there are not so much to talk. About, they are some of the main fashion and beauty companies ever, such like Dior, Givenchy, Blumarine, DVF, Elie Saab, Jil Sander, and many others, and for a so important brand is never a risk abandon on her hands.
Before concluding, it is essential to recognize that when a photographer reaches such extraordinary heights, it is often due to the synergy with the fashion magazines that supported them. A publication is more than just a platform; it is an essential partner in the evolution of great talent.
Magazines provide the necessary expertise and creative environment for photographers to refine their sensibility, sharpen their technical skills, and bring their unique visions to life. It is through this collaborative journey that an artist can build a truly iconic portfolio, transforming raw talent into a lasting professional legacy.
